Introducing Keycafe’s Photo ID Verification

Keycafe’s new Photo ID Verification feature allows for key-owners to request that guests upload photo identification of themselves before picking up keys.

We are excited to announce the global release of our new product, Photo ID Verification. You can now request that your guests upload their passport via their one-click link, and can also require a real-time verification before their access is granted.

This was originally released to satisfy the regulatory requirements of vacation rental hosts in Japan during the launch of our service there. However, due to popular demand we have now released this feature worldwide and available to you.

Japan and a few other countries such as Italy have legislation that requires property managers (including vacation rental owners on platforms such as Airbnb and Booking.com) to provide authorities with a copy of the passports of all guests. This new product simplifies the process for both the guest and the host by automating the requests for identification and automating the real-time photo ID verification before the guest can pick up keys at a Keycafe SmartBox. This ensures property managers stay compliant and have peace of mind that who they think they are renting to is actually the person gaining access to their property.  

How Photo ID Verification Works

Request a Photo ID Verification when you create a guest access:

  1. When creating a scheduled guest access, toggle Require Traveler ID located at the bottom of the access screen.
  2. Enter the Number of Travellers who will need to verify their ID. You can request each member of the guests group to upload their ID or just the main pickup person.
  3. If you’d like to also enable live photo check-in, toggle Photo Verification. This will require your guests to take a selfie on location prior to being given access to your keys.

The guest’s experience:

  1. The guest will receive a check-in link, where they will be shown a guest journey that outlines all the steps they need to complete to access your keys.
  2. From the Guest journey, they will tap on Upload Photo ID and upload an image of their passport or national ID. Once the ID is verified, the customer is ready to go to the location.
  3. When the customer is within 30 minutes of the Keycafe SmartBox location with your keys, they must navigate to the Guest Journey in the Keycafe app and tap on Take a Selfie once that is complete, the selfie will be compared against the earlier uploaded ID, and if matching the access will be granted.

The photo ID is available for the key owner to submit to the local authorities where necessary by law.
