About Atlas Obscura
Atlas Obscura is an online magazine and travel company which explores and catalogs obscure and unique travel locations. Originally founded in 2009, its co-founders Dylan Thuras and Joshua Foer wanted to create an atlas containing sights and locations which aren’t found in your typical guidebook. By drawing on reader and community member contributions, Atlas Obscura has grown to cover many of the world’s secret corners and experiences worth exploring.
While the site began with a focus on travel destinations, it has grown to cover the unusual stories and history in these areas along with the hidden but wondrous food recipes and delicacies one can find around the world. The site has grown to offer in depth video content that covers the stories and traditions often unrepresented and unappreciated in modern travel media, partnering with local guides to offer bookable experiences and trips now available on Airbnb.
Atlas Obscura Adds to Airbnb’s Experiences
The partnership comes alongside a reported $20 million Series B funding round for Atlas Obscura, with a major investment from Airbnb in order to further develop the arcane travel website’s collection of trips and local experiences. All of Atlas Obscura’s trips will be exclusively bookable through Airbnb, with the home sharing company continuously building out its catalog of experiences and adventures. Since launching its experiences in November of 2016, Airbnb has expanded these local tours from 500 in just 12 cities to more than 40,000 different experiences available in over 1,000 cities today.
