About the City of Milan
Milan is Italy’s second-most populous city in Italy (after the capital, Rome), and is the capital of the Lombardy region with the city proper’s population around 1.4 million people. As the largest metropolitan area in Italy, greater Milan has an estimated population of 7.5 million people, making it the 54th largest metropolitan area in the world. In 2017, Milan was ranked as the 15th most visited city by tourists around the world, with the city hosting 8.81 million visitors that year.
Milan has the third-largest economy among European cities and generates around 10% of the national GDP, with the region of Lombardy generating approximately 22% of Italy’s GDP. Recognised as one of the world’s four fashion capitals, Milan hosts the highly-attended semi-annual and annual events, the Milan Fashion Week and Milan Furniture Fair, which both attract a large amount of visitors and business. The city also contains some of the most notable art collections in the world, and is home to two of the world’s most successful football clubs, Inter Milan and AC Milan.
Milan’s Sharing Economy
In 2014, Milan adopted a resolution to become a “sharing city”, with the goal of replacing the idea of ownership of goods with services to allow for shared use. Since then, the city has introduced it’s municipal bike sharing service called BikeMi, with the first 30 minutes of use free for traditional bikes. The city also helped finance various registered co-working spaces like FabriQ, which is an incubator and co-working station for social innovation and sharing startups. Along with these initiatives, in 2017 Airbnb partnered with Milan and opened a “sharing economy school”, with a course designed to educate over 50s about the sharing economy and how to begin taking part in it.
Keycafe fills an important role in the sharing economy within Milan, simplifying property access management across the city. Keycafe’s partnership with Carrefour provides many convenient locations throughout the city for homeowners to manage access to their properties, and for guests to pickup keys in a safe environment that offers all the items they need such as food and beverages to begin their stay in Milan. Keycafe also partners with many other independent locations, driving both locals and travellers into their shops, to increase business, while offering a much-needed community service.
